Adding Thumbnails to ON1 Photo RAW Preset Categories

I recently discovered a posting by an amateur photographer on YouTube with directions for changing or adding thumbnails to preset categories shown in the left Presets tab of ON1 Photo RAW 2022.1. I was interested because I have collected a lot of these presets in recent years while using Photo RAW.

This screen grab of the ON1 Photo RAW Browse module shows the way preset categories (the two columns on the left) are displayed. The two generic squares outlined in yellow are older categories with no thumbnails.

Older preset categories and some new ones from third-party providers have no thumbnails, and it can become a bit more difficult with so many generic squares displayed. The YouTube directions identified a method to add thumbnails to the preset categories, but the procedure was complicated. It did not work sometimes.

Dylan Kotecki, online trainer for ON1, posted this video about using and modifying presets in an earlier version of Photo RAW, but he did not cover the topic of changing the thumbnail for the preset category.

So, with a bit of experimentation, I found the simple and probably correct but undocumented method for replacing those generic squares. (I could not find this operation referenced in the downloadable PDF manual for ON1 Photo RAW 2022.1.)

1. Open Photo RAW and navigate in Browse to an image in your library.
2. Crop the image to a 1:1 square (to fit the format used in Photo RAW for their preset thumbnails).
3. Open the preset category with the thumbnail you are changing.
4. Navigate to one of the presets in this category you prefer and apply it to your square image.
5. Click Done, which will close the Photo RAW Edit module and return to Browse.
6. With your modified image now selected in Browse, Right-Click on the preset category thumbnail to be changed.

7. A drop-menu with four items listed will appear. Select the last option: Set Category Preview.

Select the Set Category Preview option from this drop-down menu.

8. A progress bar will appear indicating “Rendering Preview”.
9. Click on another Preset category, not the one you just changed.
10. Return to the list of presets in the left ON1 Photo RAW panel.

11. The new thumbnail will now be rendered.

Please note this will not work with a variant. If you export a JPEG or TIFF from the variant and select the exported file, that should produce a thumbnail using the above procedure.
